That shortcut basically moves your files to the new destination. We’re in a pickle here… or are we? You can simply copy the files (command + C), and instead of pasting them, you just press “ command + option + V“. But there is no option to cutfiles in the Finder. While you do have a “control” key on the Mac keyboard, the shortcuts to copy and paste files, folders on a Mac is by using “ command + C“, and “ command + V“, respectively. Now that you’re about to copy your files into the work folder that you created, maybe you realised you actually want to move them there. Pay heed to Applications, this is where all of your applications are.Ĭopying and pasting files on a Mac works just as it does on Windows… almost. The most common places you need to know about, are all available in your Finder sidebar. To teach by analogy, it’s as if there was only a C: drive on your PC, and all your files were stored in there. If you haven’t, don’t worry, it’s not too hard to figure out. If you’ve ever used a Linux machine, you’ll be right at home with the macOS way of handling files. Instead, macOS treats your entire drive as one drive, and creates a single tree of destinations on it. Macs don’t organise files the way Windows does, and you will not see any drive partitions like “C, D, E, etc”. While you’re still in the Finder, you should probably get acquainted with the way your files are managed by macOS. Get Information (Properties) about a File or Folder: command + I.That’s right, the Finder supports tabbed browsing. Believe me, you’ll love it. Note : You can actually use “command + W” in any app, actually, and it is extremely handy while closing tabs in a browser, or in the Finder. You can also use the shortcut “ command + W” to close the window. You’ll see that it reveals an “X” mark as soon as your cursor hovers over it. You can click on this icon to safely remove the drive from your Mac, before disconnecting it.Ĭlosing the Finder window is easy, as well – just click on the red button on the top left corner. If you have connected a USB drive, or an external hard disk to your Mac, they will appear on the Finder side-bar as well, along with an eject icon next to their names. This is the Mac equivalent of the “Windows Explorer”, and this is where you’ll manage your files, create folders, smart folders, add tags, and basically do everything related to file management. Click on it, and you’ll see a “ Finder Window” open up for you. You can see the dots in the screenshot, under the icons for Finder, Chrome, and Quip. For a $1.99 investment, this app provides more than enough functionality to make it well worth it.Before you start wondering where the “Explorer” has gone off to, let me tell you that a Mac uses what Apple calls a “Finder”, and it is always open… waiting to help you manage your files. On the “Dock” (that’s the thing on the bottom of the screen), you’ll notice a few (a lot of) standard things that you might want to get started with. All open apps have a small black dot below their icon in the dock, just to help you identify the apps that are currently open. You can tailor its functions to suit your specific needs, and the only major drawback is that there is little help to be found if you do need it. Bottom LineīetterSnapTool works well and provides a convenient service for helping to keep your screen clear and organized as you work. While the app does work well, there seems to be nothing you can do if you run into a problem, which is unusual for a paid program. No help: There is no Help feature to go along with this program, and there is also not much in the way of support. You can set a particular size and shape for a window, and then you can assign it a command or hot key for quick access whenever you need it. Depending on where you drag the window, it will react in a different way, and the interface descriptions make it easy to see what will happen in different cases, so you can get the result you want.Ĭustomizations and shortcuts: In addition to the standard set of window sizes and shapes that come preset with the program, you also have the option of creating your own. Smooth functionality: This app works just as advertised, and when you snap it against the edge of the screen it will immediately resize to preset parameters. You can snap them against the sides or the corners, and you can even set custom window sizes and placements for certain specific situations. BetterSnapTool for Mac is a handy utility that lets you automatically resize windows by dragging them to different areas of the screen.

Our City is a diverse and amazing place to live, learn, work, and explore. Seattle has a vibrant history of working to improve equity and social justice, and HSD is a part of that work. This week marks the start of many opportunities to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. The HSD Human Interests Blog highlights some of that work. Many thanks to our planners and HR experts who managed opt-in staffing reassignments, ADS case managers who maintained client contacts and supported the communication of vital information, and to our partner agencies who are committed to helping people through times of extraordinary need. This coordinated outreach provided cold-weather supplies, food, and transportation to many severe weather night shelters and day warming centers. I want to thank the Homeless Strategy and Investments staff, the HOPE Team, the service providers, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA), volunteers, and City departments for their hard work and dedication to working together. This year’s change also brought record-breaking cold temperatures and snow that began a nine-day severe weather shelter activation. Here at HSD, we welcome Michael Bailey as a new Deputy Director and Lena Tebeau as our new Senior Executive Assistant. January 2022 brings a new mayoral administration at City Hall and new Council Committee Assignments, Schedules and Leadership Positions. The start of a new calendar year is an excellent time to talk about new beginnings. A Note from the Acting Director - January 2022 For instance, in the first section, (Introduction and Lazarus’ illness and eventual death – verses 1-16), Jesus responds to Mary and Martha’s message that their brother is ill and would Jesus please come. The Lazarus story lays down a bridge of faith and understanding that we can walk across to understand more the Master’s own death and resurrection.Īs we approach Easter, let’s ponder this Lazarus story and see what it can teach us about eternal life. John 11 and the following chapter of John 12 act like a literary bridge between Jesus’ ministry with others and his own final demonstration that God indeed provides eternal life. There are seven signs, and the story of Lazarus illustrates the final one: the resurrection and the life. You may recall that the ‘miracles’ or healings referred to in the other gospels are called ‘ signs’ in John’s Gospel. (The synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke also contain a story of Jesus’ raising the dead, but in those three cases it is Jairus’ daughter ( Matt. (If you’re studying a Biblical book with friends in a Bible Study group, or on your own, one of the joys is reading chapter by chapter and finding inspiration in why a certain story appears where it does.) In the case of the Gospel of John, this story of the raising of Lazarus serves as a catalyst leading up to Jesus’ own death and resurrection. Ok, so you found it was Chapter 11, the approximate halfway point in John’s 21 chapters. You’ll probably want to get your Bible and look it up. So why was the Lazarus story so key for early Christians and what can we learn from this? And if it was so impactful, why did Lazarus’ rising appear only in John’s Gospel? Is there a role the Lazarus story plays for John that sheds light on the rest of the Gospel of John? These are the kinds of questions that cause us to don our spiritual detective hats and result in fresh inspiration to even the most familiar of stories.īecause John’s Gospel, like the others, is told in chronological order, paying attention to where the Lazarus story appears in relation to the whole, makes sense. After all, the paintings of Mary and the baby Jesus predominate, along with those of the crucifixion and resurrection. Maybe this doesn’t match your own experience of looking at Christian religious art in the world’s great museums. Perhaps all these artistic renderings of Lazarus’ emergence from his tomb three days after his burial are the reason behind historians’ belief that the raising of Jesus’ good friend, made a deeper impression on early Christians than almost any other New Testament text. The Good Shepherd Catacomb of Saints Peter and Marcellinus, Rome, showing Jesus raising Lazarus from his tomb. Please forgive me, my darling boyfriend.ġ3. Then we look at a tree that is as far away as we can spot. We note the colors and textures in the bark and leaves, the shapes in the leaves, etc. They are also OVERLAPPING others if closest, and OVERLAPPED as they get farther away.įinally, we look at a close tree. Things look BIGGER close up, and SMALLER far away. The bottom of items seems LOWER Close up, gets HIGHER as it moves away. From any point, they can now see someone who is farther away than someone else. Next, I send students to spread out on the length of the sidewalk. First entry: Close – wide, Far – narrow for parallel lines. Then we take a ‘field trip’ outside, and stand at the end of a sidewalk to see how the sides converge as they move away from us. I make a T-Chart, with CLOSE on one side and FAR on the other. One of the “TIPS” I give my students is, “Vertical is ALWAYS vertical”! This seems to help them avoid making things “lay down” to make the angle work between what they KNOW and what we SEE.Īnother tip is to teach how to show Close Up and Far Away first. These amazing desert perspective landscapes took my 5th grade students between 3-5, 45-minutes sessions to finish. The traced over their pencil lines with a black marker and used a combination of colored pencils and markers to color. To finish up, the students created a background, foreground and desert details. The two road lines follow the bottom angle line, starting small or close together at the left hand side of the paper (vanishing point) and growing larger as it nears the right hand side of the paper. If you know me, you would know that I love when kids break the (art) rules, so this was just a fun way to reinforce the rules of perspective. I had some fun with the kids at this point because I would make them erase their cactus and follow the rules. Many will forget the rule and start drawing random cactuses. The cactus will get smaller if the student keeps the tip and base of the cactus within the two angle lines. Continue to draw the cactus towards the left side of the paper. To do this, start on one side of the paper and draw a large cactus that extends from the two angle lines. We chose to draw saguaro cactus and a dirt road to demonstrate the perspective.Erase any horizon line marks so this rule doesn’t confuse the kids. The drawing of the cacti and the road will occur on the angle lines and NOT the horizon line. The angle lines don’t have to touch the corners as this might be too steep of an angle. Do again but this time above the horizon line.Trace an angle line to the opposite edge of the paper. Then, place ruler on one side of the line at the paper’s edge. This way, the crease can act as the horizon line. Or, you can do what I did and folded the paper in half horizontally.
This vent hole will need to be adjusted in diameter based on your flow rate. The standpipe has a small vent hole on the top elbow that prevents a siphon from forming in the drain pipe. The end of the drain is then typically submerged below the water level in your sump to help avoid splashing noise and reduce salt spray. The larger pipe diameters can handle higher flow rates and can be reduced in diameter at the bulkhead before draining down into the sump. Inside the overflow box, the drain pipe will typically measure 1" - 2" in diameter and will rise to about 2" below the weirs on your overflow box. While the term Durso is unique to the aquarium hobby, it is an example of an "open-channel" style drain that does not engage a siphon. Everything you need to build a Durso Standpipe can be purchased at a local hardware store using generic PVC pipe and plumbing parts. Technically speaking, the Durso Standpipe is the plumbing assembly above the bulkhead, inside the overflow box. Instead of having the water crash down into the bottom of the overflow box, the Durso Standpipe allows for the water to rise and enter the drain through an attached elbow close to the surface as demonstrated in the diagram. The Durso is easy to install and does not take up much space making it popular for smaller aquariums with sump systems and those DIY folks who like to build stuff with their own two hands. The Durso Style drain reduces that noise level considerably when tuned correctly. The faster that water is moving, the louder it would get. In days past, noisy drains were problematic because the water would splash and gurgle as it passed through the pipes and down into the sump. The Durso Standpipe was created by a hobbyist, Richard Durso, and was born out of the desire to quietly and efficiently drain water from the display aquarium down into the sump. This is the most basic of the drains styles that only requires a single hole to be drilled into the tank. All of them can be used with either an internal or external overflow box. These are the three most common water drain technologies you will see used on an aquarium. Durso, Herbie, and Bean Animal refer to the drain plumbing itself inside the overflow box. While there are several different types of overflows using a variety of different drain styles, they all accomplish the same thing - drain water from your display down into your sump or filter.Īn overflow box can be internal or external meaning the box is either inside the aquarium or outside the aquarium. The overflow box itself consists of a weir and drainpipes to get water out of your tank and down into your sump. An overflow box is used to drain water from your display aquarium down into your sump or filtration system.
